Animal bites may result in serious injuries, permanent disfigurement or death. Serious injuries can permanently negatively impact the victim's health and lifestyle. If the bite was unprovoked and caused by the owner's negligence or if state law automatically places liability on the animal's owner, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries, loss of wages and other losses.
Generally pet and wild animal owners, including those offering their animals for hire, are liable for the action of their pets if they cause an injury or property damage and were unprovoked.
According to the Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists, an estimated 4.7 million people in the United States are bitten by dogs each year. Some states have enacted laws specifically related to dog bites and dog attacks which include criminal penalties. In Florida for example, if a dog that has previously been declared dangerous attacks or bites a person or a domestic animal without provocation, the owner is guilty of a misdemeanor. Also, if a dog that has previously been declared dangerous attacks and causes severe injury to or death of any human, the owner is guilty of a felony.
